Before we jump into this section of our study, let me make a few comments. First of all, it’s OK not to like memorization. Your culture (if you’re American) has biased you against this form of learning. We live in a unique age where questions can be looked up on handheld devices and accessed in .016 seconds! We scrounged through our father’s workshops for a whole Saturday coming up with all the pieces; we then convened at our local secret tree house and put the “radio” together. The last step was to connect one of the clips...

Imagine your brain is like a closet. Inside you would like to “hang” all of the amazing truths of Scripture in an organized fashion so that you can pull them out at any time. The following is the way I was taught to memorize – commonly known as the “Topical Memory System,” developed by The Navigators in the 1940’s and 50’s. Here’s what it looks like… The topic on each card is the “hanger.” If ever...

Build a house and at some point, there will be maintenance. Install a landscape, and at some point, there will be weeding, mulching, and trimming. Buy and drive a car, and there will be routine maintenance. Nearly everything that we acquire that has value has a maintenance routine attached to it. Because our brains are organic and imperfect, even Scripture memory requires maintenance. By having a ...
