We’ve all heard it: “Trust your gut.” “Follow your heart.” “Let your conscience be your guide.”

It sounds wise—but Jesus never said it.

In Week 1 of Things Jesus Never Said, we look at Paul’s surprising words in 1 Corinthians 4:1–5: “My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent.” Our conscience is a gift from God, but it isn’t always right. It can be shaped by our culture, experiences, relationships, desires, and even repeated choices.

So how do we know what’s actually true?

Instead of asking Jesus to agree with our conscience, we need to allow Jesus to train our conscience. Through His Word, His Spirit, His grace, and wise Christian community, Jesus reshapes what we love, what bothers us, and ultimately how we live.

Big Idea: My conscience doesn’t get the final word. Jesus does.
